Oddly, the one thing I noticed in this is that I really liked the sound effects.
I laughed out loud when I realized they were trying to make it more serious and realistic.
It's like they gave it the BSG treatment.
I think we need to come up with a term for things getting the Dark Knight/BSG makeover.
I notice that the threat and consequences of radiation appears to be passé.
That's odd.
What's that psychological term that came about after 9/11? The thing about being desensitized to death tolls exceeding a certain number?
That also seems to come into play here.

Now that you mention it, the radiation thing is kind of interesting. Funny that. And yes!~it is kind of the BSG treatment! As I recall "DialTone" was a guy.

Some of the other stuff, Stalker with dreadlocks and Duke running around with "ARMY" written on his vest both look pretty ridiculous. But no more than the original stuff I guess.
Just watched the whole thing, on the TV. Aside from all the killing (There is much killing, and talk of killing!), it was pretty much a G.I. Joe episode. Lots of point-blank firefights where nobody hits anything until someone does something clever, a corny (but undeniably awesome) duel between Storm Shadow and an OP-as-usual Snake Eyes, and lots of toyetic glorification of gear and costumes.
The animation is pretty sweet, and the color palettes in particular really make it nice to watch. Kinda reminds me of the fantasy sequences in Boondocks. I think I read something somewhere about one studio doing both.
I gotta say, it felt pretty much exactly like I remember the show feeling. That said, I think it's been discussed hereabouts that the shows we watched as kids do NOT feel the same when we watch them now, because we're older and wiser, or more self-conscious about what we like, or whatever. Star Wars being the exception to this, of course.
