Here is the updated Tauren costume for this year ;) I didn't quite get to finish it the way I wanted to... I flat out ran out of time. But I may get back to it again early next year and go hit Kawaii Kon 2011 ... I think we should all tap into our inner costume building geek and hit Kawaii Kon all together!

Tauren Halloween Costume

Speaking of Halloween, check out this sweet costume our old friend Earl made (Your old friend, my new friend). He was a Tauren last year, but this year he resolved to be like, a better, higher-level Tauren with badder-ass armor and gear. Here are some notes on how he made it:

I made the armor mainly with craft foam, sealed with mod podge and painted with black latex house paint and dry brushed with metallic silver acrylic paint .. the giant rivets are ping pong balls cut in ½ ... And the chest piece base is made from a rubber maid tote and a laundry basket … I plan on making a rough tutorial and posting it online with pics to help others interested making this kind of stuff… when I was researching all I could find was elf armor and Halo armor.

Spider-Man: Threat or Menace?

There's a guy who plays Spider-Man in the giant Toys-R-Us in Times Square. He plays the part in a way I've never seen before--instead of striking all kinds of signature Spider-Man poses for the cameras, this guy kind of plays it for realism. You don't get the sense that he's agile at all until he's doing something that requires agility. He crouches up on railings and jumps around quite a bit, sure; but when he walks from one place to another, he just walks, like a regular guy. This is pretty weird, given the fact that he's wearing a Spider-Man costume. In fact, it's kind of creepy. On top of all this, he does a lot of clowning around, just like the real Spider-Man (that's right). He doesn't crack jokes, but he does all kinds of physical gags, dropping out of frame when customers are trying to take his picture; tapping people on the shoulder, then twisting out of their line of sight; and so on.

I think this guy understands the source material really well. Furthermore, he made me, a long-time reader of the comic, finally realize why everyone in Spider-Man's New York, cab drivers, newspaper editors, and even his own aunt don't really want to share a city with Spider-Man. Spider-Man is kind of annoying!

what I hate/love about cosplay.

<---What I hate about these is that the person gives up at some critical point and thus makes the entire ensemble look lazy. This is like especially a double fail for the steampunk guys. A top hat awith a watch on it?? FUCK YOU! The GIR isn't bad, it's the two douches next to it I hate.
<---My love for these is that the cosplayer is either very brave or very thorough about their costume choices. You can tell they really love what they are doing. Of course, then there's the TIE fighter guys who in a weird way address the whole ship/environment as character issue we had a few weeks back. Yay! I love tie-ins! It's like going to a dungeons & dragons con dressed as a dungeon.
