Tauren Halloween Costume

Speaking of Halloween, check out this sweet costume our old friend Earl made (Your old friend, my new friend). He was a Tauren last year, but this year he resolved to be like, a better, higher-level Tauren with badder-ass armor and gear. Here are some notes on how he made it:

I made the armor mainly with craft foam, sealed with mod podge and painted with black latex house paint and dry brushed with metallic silver acrylic paint .. the giant rivets are ping pong balls cut in ½ ... And the chest piece base is made from a rubber maid tote and a laundry basket … I plan on making a rough tutorial and posting it online with pics to help others interested making this kind of stuff… when I was researching all I could find was elf armor and Halo armor.

Waiola Shave Ice is Famous

Shot this a couple of weeks ago at the Waiola Store, where the shave ice, in my opinion, a better mouth-experience than the ever-so-slightly overrated Matsumoto Shave Ice.

P.S. zsumoz is secretly Dick Vomit, contributor to Pieces of Things and Acme Shorts. Both Dick Vomit and zsumoz are one hell of a photographer. He recently quit his day job to motor west and complete his labor of non-sexual, completely platonic love, a documentary about the ex-band Walt Mink. Dense Valley

Friend and colleague Mika Oshima is writing and drawing a comic about growing up in Manoa, of all places. I'm really liking her compressed-space depictions of the architecture and flora and fauna of the valley. Check out Dense Valley, and watch for updates!

Jack & Max Escape from the End of Time

Colleague Mike Dawson has been totally working a lot since the release of his critically acclaimed memoir Freddie & Me. He's also got another book coming out this month: Ace-Face: The Mod with the Metal Arms. Freddie & Me was one of the better comics I've read in a while, and Ace-Face looks like great fun, also. Ted at Gecko Books will order it for you if you ask nice.

The point I meant to make is this: Mike is also writing and drawing a serial web-comic called Jack & Max Escape from the End of Time that I think a lot of us would find highly enjoyable and quite accessible to our particular sensibilities. It's a sweet mix of contradictions--both mysterious and funny; the art manages to be at once goofy and bold, and the story hops between the deadly serious and the unapologetically nerdy and infantile. And it starts HERE.

What it's like in New York City

My friend Annie lives in New York City. Yesterday, in a meeting I attended virtually by hologram, Annie offered her artistic take on the hypothetical Hawaii presentation of various and sundry foods and beverages. She belittles her own artistic skill, but if we were playing Pictionary, and the answer was "eating Spaghetti by the pool", I'd totally get it. Anyway, here is how Annie gets to work, on the days she bothers to show up. This is what it's like in New York City.

A Present From Across the Seas

My friend Annabelle has sent me this present via mail. It is called a HOMIE. It seems like a toy, but maybe it is a weapon, or something. I climbed down into my yard, told the LOST cast members to screw off, and photographed him. I have named him Stephen after Stephen K. Chan. Annabelle has a blong, a real one, and it is really really funny, and always picks me up when I am down. This is because Annabelle is always having a worse day than me. Punahou Carnival

Hey, so anyone up for going to the Punahou Carnival tomorrow? We're going to try to get there when the thing opens, around 11:30 or so. We're bringing the boys, and I'll be reminiscing about high school, making up things as I go.

Samuel

hi. this is samuel. nice to meet you. he is blue. there is a house and there is grass and there is a sun and there is birds and there is birds who is upside down. samuel likes birds. i like birds too and one day samuel was walking on the beach. i like dogs.

one day samuel dumped a lot of sand on top of a beach and said, "oh no i have dropped sand on this beach and i can not find the sand that i dropped." samuel called his friends. his freinds are sue and terry and doug and penelope. his friends came to his house. samuel left the beach and he went to his house. his house is red. sam is short for samuel and he picked up his friends and went to the beach to look for his sand. sam was at the beach before he went to his house and he dropped his sand there. he needed his friends to get the sand so that is why he went to his house and the sun is yellow.

they found his sand on the beach. samuel was happy with all of his friends and they played with the sprinkler that my mom gave us. the end.
