I want to learn Japanese pretty bad. How long do you figure it'd take me? Does anyone else here speak Japanese?
I may be mistaken, but I think Odori may have made use of the language once or twice.
From what I've observed, Japanese is tough to learn as an adult. I think the quickest way would be to move to a small Japanese village where no one speaks English and stay there for at least two years. Seriously! I know that may not be very realistic, but I don't know what else to suggest. (I absorbed Japanese mostly by osmosis while living in Tokyo for 22 years as a child and adult. It helped that my dad made me his personal experiment in raising an American child to grow up speaking Japanese. It was a little irritating at the time, but I grew to appreciate being his social and linguistic lab rat.)
I heard the quickest way to learn Japanese was to eat the brain and thyroid gland of a Japanese person.
Having forgotten most of what I learned in High School language classes, I now watch a lot of Japanese movies and anime to pick up useful phrases such as "Kill them all" or "It is my destiny, and I accept it ruefully" or "I am a horny businesswoman." All have proven fairly useful in conversation at one time or another.
I can't tell you how many times I've needed to tell people that I am in fact, a horny business woman.
