Some silliness to cheer you up during these dark days of the campaign, when it appears the U.S. is on the verge of electing a V.P. who believes the Iraq war is "God's work" and who wants to deny women control over their bodies. (For some reason Sarah Palin makes me think of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tail"... I wonder what Ms. Boswell thinks. I think she's the one put the book on the "Identity & Culture" reading list!)
Go Obama! Please.

Not to be "that guy" but I'm afraid I am "that guy".
Isn't it "Handmaid's Tale"?
I'd like to read "Handmaid's Tail", though.
I think it's "The Handmaid's Tale" _ at least the First American Edition 1986 that I still have from when I first read it says that's the title.
But I need to correct what I quoted Sarah Palin as saying... I should have written "God's plan" not "God's work."
The full quote, from a talk she gave at an Alaska church: "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right for our country. That our national leaders are sending them our on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan." (Before this she said her son was deploying to Iraq.)
I saw her explain to ABC's Charlie Gibson that she wasn't saying sending troops to Iraq was God's plan. Instead, she says she was telling people to pray that it was God's plan.
Either way, you've got a V.P. candidate _ with a serious chance of winning in November! _ that's trying to come up with a religious basis for U.S. military action. That's scary stuff.
I think the last 1200+ years of Western history is pretty fucking scary stuff.
A very scary thing the Republicans have been doing is this half-hearted backpedaling thing. Palin's correction is a para-retraction, attempting to have it both ways. Giuliani, on Meet the Press this morning, suggested carelessly that he wasn't impugning all community organizers in his keynote speech at the RNC; only that he meant Obama wasn't a terribly good community organizer. There's a talking point they're not saying out loud. Something's changed.
Guiliani is acting all creepy! Good think he doesn't want to run for NYC mayor again. Can't imagine he'd be able to win after he's turned into rabid anti-urban campaigner.
I just hope voters are paying attention to the way the McCain campaign is constantly streaming distortions. I though we wanted to get away from leadership like this!
Btw, galspanic. Thanks for being that guy and pointing out my tail/tale confusion. I had no idea what you were talking about when I responded before because I didn't realize I wrote "tail" the first time. Just realized now. I'm a nimwit.
Anway, regarding Atwood's vision coming to life: If the U.S. is going to take away a woman's ability to control her body, it makes make sense that a modern-looking professional woman would do the favors.
Palin doesn't necessarily look like someone who would appoint Supreme Court justices who would be 100 percent certain to overturn Roe v. Wade. And that's why she's be the best person to do it. She doesn't arouse people's suspicions.
