Seems to me the clip/movie is poking fun at American and European obsessions with the "exotic Japanese geisha." And "Western" notions of geisha deserve much derision and mockery.
Besides, the "Fried Shrimp" move at about 1'45" is awesome.
Holy shit, I had this same video queued--it was set to post at 5:30 tomorrow morning! I had this to say about it:
I know I'm totally playing into someone's hands by reposting this, but what the hell. While this is pretty super-awesome, I worry what long-term damage will be caused by this level of self-awareness from our weird friends to the east. For example: The first Winnie the Pooh book is totally charming. Subsequent volumes are tedious, because Milne knows exactly how cute he's being.
Obviously, I'm interested to know what you guys think about this--Now that the Japanese know why they're so funny, are they more likely to play their biologically ingrained aesthetic tendencies for laughs?
I agree. When I first saw this it struck me as a little too perfectly made for a youtube audience and maybe a little disingenuous, but then I was hoping that was just because of how the trailer was made and didn't reflect the actual quality of the movie... or something. That vampire girl vs frankenstein girl one looks GREAT, though.
This is almost exactly what the amateur video group I used to be in wanted to do. Like almost exactly. Down to the crazy insane narrator voice. Like glimpse-into-a-parallel-universe almost exactly. Well to be fair we were thinking Catholic Schoolgirl Avengers, but then, we live in Hawaii. I remember drinking several big gulps and discussing how the hell we could pull this off. We couldn't get past the technology factor though. I'm happy/startled to know that this exists. (I've been curious about what exactly the Tokyo Gore Police is about, as I have seen just tiny snippets.) This lives up to my imaginings.
God, even the transforming what-the-fuck mobile playing the Biwa missle gun!
Of course I queue my posts. My instincts are to hide my movements. As the saying goes, just because they aren't actually out to get you; doesn't mean you shouldn't be paranoid. Or something.
The Vampire/Frankenstein thing does kind of contextualize this Trailer, and I think I have to revise my suggestion that the filmmaker was playing to the expectations of the curated internets.
I can almost imagine the Darklight Group trying to pull this off, Galspanic. What I can't see is D.S. giving up because it wouldn't look convincing enough!
Hah. You can tell they're pandering to a Western audience because the whole seppku sequence is all wrong--only men commit seppuku that way. You're supposed to stab yourself through the neck if you're a girl. Oh and tie your ankles together so that when you drop dead you don't sprawl all over the floor in an unseemly fashion. (Yeah, I'm one of those sad people who gets hung up on details.)
That said--I thought it was funny. Sick, but funny (hm, kind of like Mr. Fugu).

I love that you know how women should commit seppuku, MRI.
