Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Hey, look, it's a new movie by Hayao Miyazaki. You guys probably knew about this. I didn't know about this! Why would you keep this from me? He says it's his last, apparently. But how the hell can he know that? He also says it's based on "The Little Mermaid". Well, okay!

The original little mermaid story, I'm hoping.
Yeah his son Goro is taking over. He has already directed something called Tales From Earthsea for Ghibli. (I think we need a Ghibli catch up night)
What is exciting about this sad departure is that apparently he's leaving so that he can go back to drawing manga.
Being a humongous fan of Nausicaa & the Valley of the Wind, this is exciting news for me.
Nausicaa is my favorite of his--the comic is maaaybe second to Akira for me in manga. The movie, having watched it relatively recently, sure has dated animation, though. Man I would love if they redid it.
Is the Earthsea movie out already?
Odori: by the way, Earthsea is a Le Guin story.
Both Ponyo and Earthsea are out, in Japanish. The are subbed quite well though, or so I hear.
Yes, Ghibli catch-up night!
That thing looks like a torso girl. I like Miyazaki's movies a lot but I think they're better when he tells his own stories and not when he uses other stories as a jump off. "Howl's Moving Castle" was terrible. (Even worse if you'd read the book, which was actually very funny.)
Agree. I really loved the way Howl looked, but I kept wondering when the movie was going to start.
I'm so completely terrified to ask what a Torso Girl is.
I'm about halfway through the Nausicaa books you lent me, GP. I can't believe how rich the lore is, and I love the way he just dives right into the story. A return to Manga sounds like a good trade-off for the world.
I believe the term; "torso girl" is a dialectical derivative of "flipper baby", but I could be wrong. All I'm sure is it has something to do with either Thalidomide, or Agent Orange.
You guys. As far as I know, Thalidomide babies are the so-called "flipper" babies. Torso babies are not affiliated with any kind of drug.
oh god oh god I can't look
I looked up "torso girl" on the internets and it came up pron-esque. Am I doing it wrong?
Galspanic--try looking it up in conjunction with Todd Browning's movie Freaks. I think the torso man in that one is Prince Randian. Otherwise if you're REALLY interested I can loan you my Mutants book (no, it did not come with a D&D game).
Sorry boys, didn't mean to make it a Halloween fest every time I comment. ;-)
