I'm not entirely sure what's happening here.
* This doll is really named "Rika-chan" or "Licca-chan" not Barbie. But she's kind of like the Japanese version of Barbie.

Man, I can't believe how bad the CGI was back then.
There's some really really weird stuff going on in this.
It's like a love letter or something.
HOLY GOD I just followed up on this. It was a series?!?! It's like thunderbirds, only insane!

!!!!
The Komadori Brothers guy says he's collected a bunch of 8mm home movies from the 80's and is posting them on Youtube. He especially like otaku type ones (explaining the dolls...)
I can't image where he's finding these. Amazing stuff. The one you posted Galspanic is hilarious!
k.. wut?
These are so awesome. I love the multimedia approach. Just goes to show, you don't have to be able to afford expensive sets or props or special effects or real women to tell a compelling story.
Three points about the video Galspanic posted:
1) The scene of the paper airplane chasing the giant crab through the crowded Tokyo streets is worth the price of admission
2) Comet Empire Theme begins at 3:40
3) Wearing a long skirt can really hold back your powers
I love the paper airplane - and then the origami man who appears later.
But one of the most amusing things about the Panic clip, for me, is that the supercaption says the muddy body of water in the opening shot is supposed to be Siene River. And the street is supposed to be the Champs Elysees.
But the river in the film is actually a famous canal in Osaka called Dotonbori. And the dolls are speaking in the Osaka dialect!
So rough and tumble Osaka is standing in for Paris! YES
This Wikipedia entry on Dotonbori has photos of the giant crab and the clown featured in the clip.

This thing is a mess. Even with Odori's advanced skills, we'll never sort it out!
