Best not to think too hard.

Star Wars (Episode IV): Why did the Empire try to kill the heroes on the Death Star?
Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader have a plan, and one that very nearly turns out to work perfectly: They install a tracking device on the Millennium Falcon so the Death Star can follow it to the rebel base. In order for this to work, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and the droids have to actually get to the ship and take off, right? So why does the Empire try to crush them in the trash compactor, then send squads of stormtroopers after them? I mean, I can understand sending some token troops just to make sure it wasn’t obvious, but they really seem to be trying to kill them. Of course Leia does say “They let us go. It’s the only explanation for the ease of our escape.” But I’m inclined to agree with Han that it really wasn’t that easy, and seriously, Princess, if you’re so sure you’re being tracked, why are you going straight for the place you know the Empire is looking for?
For those of you willing to indulge your sci-fi-inner nerdness, go here for even more ridiculousness. The comments section is just as priceless.

Maybe the Empire was trying to cover all bases. If they successfully killed the heroes then they wouldn't have been able to track the Falcon and discover the location of the rebel base. But at least they wouldn't need to worry about the Death Star plans getting to the Rebels right then and there. They'd have prolonged the life of the first Death Star and they would've gotten rid of major rebel alliance figures.

As a variation on the theme, here's how ep IV should have ended.

Hi, SithPoon5! I'm with you--I bet the Empire was just making sure it had all of its bases covered.

As I'm sure many of you have come to suspect, I tend to think that anything that happened in a Star Wars movie actually happened, and who am I to question history?

THAT SAID, This does provide an answer to an age-old question: Why are Imperial Stormtroopers such bad shots? Also, the crisis in Trash Compactor 3263827 wasn't engineered by the Death Star Staff to kill any of the MF7--the garbage compression was on the scheduled maintenance cycle.

Those dudes should have fucking shot that escape pod, though.
